Guru Arjan Devji (1563-1606) was the fifth of the Ten Gurus of Sikhism who became Guru in 1581 Guru Arjan extended his good wishes for the rebel Prince Khusrau,the grandson of Akbar. Guru Arjan introduced the institution of Masands (representative of the Gurus at far flung places) along with the principle Dasvand of a Tenth of an individual's income payable for the Guru's Langar (Common Kitchen) and for other acts of benevolence on behalf of the poor. Guru Arjan compiled the hymns of previous Gurus and of other saints into Adi Granth, the first edition of the Sikh scripture and installed it in the Harimandir Sahib.
