What does the repeated use of the word, 'smile' mean?

Solution:

The word 'smile' has been repeated to show that in order to hide her fearful thought of separating from her mother, she puts on a false smile. Secondly, she gives moral support to her mother by promising to meet her soon. She tries to hide her feelings by smiling again and again.
