Question : 9 of 36
Marks: +1, -0
You are given samples of three metalssodium, magnesium and copper. Suggest any two activities to arrange them in order of their decreasing reactivity.
Solution:
Given three metals-sodium (Na)(\mathrm{Na}), magnesium (Mg)(\mathrm{Mg}), copper (Cu)(\mathrm{Cu})
Activity I. When the three given metals Na\mathrm{Na}, Mg\mathrm{Mg} and Cu\mathrm{Cu} are added to magnesium chloride solution separately taken in three different test tubes, we will find that displacement reactions will take place in the following manner:
 MgCl2\mathrm{MgCl}_2 solution  Metals
 Displacement reaction  Na\mathrm{Na}
 No reaction  Mg\mathrm{Mg}
 No reaction  Cu\mathrm{Cu}
This shows that Na\mathrm{Na} is the most reactive metal as it displaces Mg\mathrm{Mg} from MgCl2\mathrm{MgCl}_2 solution.
Activity II. When Na,Mg\mathrm{Na}, \mathrm{Mg} and Cu\mathrm{Cu} metals are taken in three different test tubes and CuSO solution is added in each test tube, we will find that displacement reactions will take place in the following manner:
 CuSO4\mathrm{CuSO}_4 solution  Metals
 Displacement reaction  Na\mathrm{Na}
 Displacement reaction  Mg\mathrm{Mg}
 No reaction  Cu\mathrm{Cu}
This shows that Cu\mathrm{Cu} is the least reactive metal. Order of decreasing reactivity: Na>Mg>\mathrm{Na} > \mathrm{Mg} > Cu\mathrm{Cu}.
