Consider the carbon compounds having following molecular formula:
(i) C3H6\mathrm{C}_3\mathrm{H}_6 (ii) C3H8\mathrm{C}_3\mathrm{H}_8 (iii) C4H6\mathrm{C}_4\mathrm{H}_6 (iv) C6H6\mathrm{C}_6\mathrm{H}_6 (v) C6H12\mathrm{C}_6\mathrm{H}_{12}
(a) State the number of double covalent bonds present in C3H6\mathrm{C}_3\mathrm{H}_6.
(b) Write the formula of first member of the homologous series to which the carbon compound C4H6\mathrm{C}_4\mathrm{H}_6 belongs.
(c) Which one of the above compounds forms ring structure of carbon atoms?
(d) Identify, which of the above compounds, is a member of alkane series.
Solution:  
(a) One double bond. (C3H6\left( \mathrm{C}_3\mathrm{H}_6\right. Lewis structure contains three carbon atoms bonding with six hydrogen atoms, all these are bonded with the 7 single bonds and 1 double bond).
(b) C4H6\mathrm{C}_4\mathrm{H}_6 is an alkyne,
The alkynes comprise a series of carbonand hydrogen-based compounds that contain at least one triple bond. The group of compounds is a homologous series with the general molecular formula of CnH2n\mathrm{C}_n\mathrm{H}_{2n-} 2{}_2, where nn equals to any integer greater than one. Thus, the first member of this homologous series is ethyne (C2H2).H\left( \mathrm{C}_2\mathrm{H}_2\right) . \mathrm{H}- CCH\mathrm{C} \equiv \mathrm{C}-\mathrm{H}
(c) C6H6\mathrm{C}_6\mathrm{H}_6 (Benzene) will form the ring
The structure has a six-carbon ring which is represented by a hexagon and it includes 3-alternate double bonds.
(d) C3H8\mathrm{C}_3\mathrm{H}_8 is an alkane as it has each carbon bonded to four other atoms through single covalent bonds and follow general formula CnH2n+2\mathrm{C}_n\mathrm{H}_{2n+2}
