Question : 19 of 30
Marks: +1, -0
(a) Calculate ΔG0\Delta G^0 for the reaction
Mg(s)+Cu2+(aq)Mg2+(aq)\mathrm{Mg}(\mathrm{s}) + \mathrm{Cu}^{2+}(\mathrm{aq}) \rightarrow \mathrm{Mg}^{2+}(\mathrm{aq}) +Cu(s)+ \mathrm{Cu}(\mathrm{s})
Given: Ecell=2.71V,1F=96500Cmol1E^\circ_{\text{cell}} = 2.71 \, \text{V}, 1 \, \text{F} = 96500 \, \text{C} \, \text{mol}^{-1}
(b) Name the type of cell that was used in Apollo space program for providing electrical power.
Solution:
(i) For the reaction,
  Mg(s)+Cu2+(aq)Mg2+(aq)\; \mathrm{Mg}(\mathrm{s}) + \mathrm{Cu}^{2+}(\mathrm{aq}) \rightarrow \mathrm{Mg}^{2+}(\mathrm{aq}) +Cu(s)+ \mathrm{Cu}(\mathrm{s})
ΔG0  =nFE0\Delta G^0 \; = - nFE^0
  =2×96500×2.71\; = -2 \times 96500 \times 2.71
  =523030Jmol1\; = -523030 \, \text{J} \, \text{mol}^{-1}
(ii) During the Apollo space programme, the fuel cell, which harnesses the interaction between hydrogen and oxygen to create water, was employed to generate electricity.
