Marks: +1, -0
(a) How would you account for the following:
(i) Actinoid contraction is greater than lanthanoid contraction.
(ii) Transition metals form coloured compounds.
(b) Complete the following equation:
2MnO4−+6H++5NO2−→2 \mathrm{MnO}_4^{-}+6 \mathrm{H}^{+}+5 \mathrm{NO}_2^{-} \rightarrow
Solution:
(a) (i) 5f5 f orbital electrons have poor shielding effect than 4f4 f orbital electrons.
(ii) Due to dd - dd transition or the energy of excitation of an electron from lower dd orbital to higher dd-orbital lies in the visible region and presence of unpaired electrons in the dd-orbital.
(b) 2MnO4−+6H++5NO2−→2Mn2+2 \mathrm{MnO}_4^{-}+6 \mathrm{H}^{+}+5 \mathrm{NO}_2^{-} \rightarrow 2 \mathrm{Mn}^{2+} +3H2O+5NO3−+3 \mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}+5 \mathrm{NO}_3^{-}
