Question : 13 of 26
Marks: +1, -0
(i) What type of isomerism is shown by the complex [Co(NH3)6][Cr(CN)6][\mathrm{Co}(\mathrm{NH}_3)_6][\mathrm{Cr}(\mathrm{CN})_6] ?
(ii) Why a solution of [Ni(H2O)6]2+[\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O})_6]^{2+} is green while a solution of [Ni(CN)4]2[\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{CN})_4]^{2-} is colourless ? (At. no. of Ni=28\mathrm{Ni}=28 ).
(iii) Write the IUPAC name of the following complex: [Co(NH3)5(CO3)]Cl[\mathrm{Co}(\mathrm{NH}_3)_5(\mathrm{CO}_3)]\mathrm{Cl}.
Solution:
(i) Complex [Co(NH3)6]    [Cr(CN)6][\mathrm{Co}(\mathrm{NH}_3)_6]\;\;[\mathrm{Cr}(\mathrm{CN})_6] shows coordination isomerism. This type of isomerism arises from the interchange of ligands between cationic and anionic entities of different metal ions present in the complex.
(ii) In [Ni(H2O)6]2+,H2O[\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O})_6]^{2+},\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O} is a weak field ligand. So there are unpaired electrons in Ni2+\mathrm{Ni}^{2+}. In this complex, the dd electrons from the lower energy level can be excited to the higher energy level. The possibility of dd - dd electrons is present. Therefore, Ni(H2O6)]2+\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}_6)]^{2+} is coloured. In [Ni(CN)4]2[\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{CN})_4]^{2-}, the electrons are all paired as CN\mathrm{CN}^{-}is a strong ligand. So, ddd-d transition is not possible in [Ni(CN)4]2[\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{CN})_4]^{2-}. Hence, it is colourless.
(iii) The IUPAC name of [Co(NH3)5(CO3)]Cl[\mathrm{Co}(\mathrm{NH}_3)_5(\mathrm{CO}_3)]\mathrm{Cl} is Pentaamminecarbonatocobalt (III) chloride.
