Question : 33 of 37
Marks: +1, -0
Arrange the following compounds as directed:
(i) In increasing order of solubility in water:
(CH3)2NH,CH3NH2,C6H5NH2(\mathrm{CH}_3)_2\mathrm{NH}, \mathrm{CH}_3\mathrm{NH}_2, \mathrm{C}_6\mathrm{H}_5\mathrm{NH}_2
(ii) In decreasing order of basic strength in aqueous solution :
(CH3)3N,(CH3)2NH,CH3NH2(\mathrm{CH}_3)_3\mathrm{N}, (\mathrm{CH}_3)_2\mathrm{NH}, \mathrm{CH}_3\mathrm{NH}_2
(iii) In increasing order of boiling point:
(C2H5)2NH,(C2H5)3N,C2H5NH2(\mathrm{C}_2\mathrm{H}_5)_2\mathrm{NH}, (\mathrm{C}_2\mathrm{H}_5)_3\mathrm{N}, \mathrm{C}_2\mathrm{H}_5\mathrm{NH}_2
Solution:
(i) Increasing order of solubility:
C6H5NH2<(CH3)2NH<CH3NH2\mathrm{C}_6\mathrm{H}_5\mathrm{NH}_2< (\mathrm{CH}_3)_2\mathrm{NH}< \mathrm{CH}_3\mathrm{NH}_2
(ii) Decreasing order of basic strength in aqueous solution:
(CH3)2NH>(CH3)3N>CH3NH(\mathrm{CH}_3)_2\mathrm{NH}> (\mathrm{CH}_3)_3\mathrm{N}> \mathrm{CH}_3\mathrm{NH}
(iii) Increasing order of boiling point:
(C2H5)3N<(C2H5)2NH<C2H5NH2(\mathrm{C}_2\mathrm{H}_5)_3\mathrm{N}< (\mathrm{C}_2\mathrm{H}_5)_2\mathrm{NH}< \mathrm{C}_2\mathrm{H}_5\mathrm{NH}_2
