Question : 12 of 13
Marks: +1, -0
SECTION - C
(b) A solution of [Ni(H2O)6]2+[\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O})_6]^{2+} is green but a solution of [Ni(CO)4][\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{CO})_4] is colourless. Explain.
[Atomic number: Ni=28\mathrm{Ni}=28 ]
(b) In [Ni(H2O)6]2+Ni[\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O})_6]^{2+} \mathrm{Ni} has configuration of 3d83d^8.
The two unpaired electrons do not pair up in presence of weak H2O\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O} ligand, but in [Ni(CO)4][\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{CO})_4] due to presence of strong CO\mathrm{CO} ligand, it pairs up. As there is unpaired electron in [Ni(H2O)6]2+[\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O})_6]^{2+} it is coloured and [Ni(CO)4][\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{CO})_4] is colourless, due to absence of unpaired electrons.
