Question : 1 of 16
Marks: +1, -0
Standard electrode potential for Sn4+/Sn2+\mathrm{Sn}^{4+}/\mathrm{Sn}^{2+} couple is +0.15 V and that for the Cr3+/Cr\mathrm{Cr}^{3+}/\mathrm{Cr} couple is –0.74 V. The two couples in their standard states are connected to make a cell. The cell potential will be
Solution:
Cell notation CrCr3+Sn4+Sn2+\mathrm{Cr} \, \vert \, \mathrm{Cr}^{3+} \Vert \mathrm{Sn}^{4+} \, \vert \, \mathrm{Sn}^{2+}
Ecell0=ECr/Cr3+0+ESn4+/Sn2+0E^{0}_{\text{cell}} = E^{0}_{\mathrm{Cr/Cr}^{3+}} + E^{0}_{\mathrm{Sn}^{4+}/\mathrm{Sn}^{2+}}
= 0.74 + 0.15
= 0.89 V
