Question : 5 of 16
Marks: +1, -0
Consider the following reaction and identify A and B:
CH3Cl+NaIdry acetoneA+B\mathrm{CH}_3\mathrm{Cl} + \mathrm{NaI} \xrightarrow{\text{dry acetone}} \mathrm{A}+\mathrm{B}
Solution:
This is the Finkelstein reaction.
Sodium iodide (NaI) reacts with methyl chloride (CH3Cl\mathrm{CH_3Cl}).
Iodide ion (I)(\mathrm{I}^-) replaces chloride (Cl)(\mathrm{Cl}^-).
Dry acetone is used because NaCl is insoluble in acetone, so it precipitates out, driving the reaction forward.
Products:
A = CH3I\mathrm{CH_3I} (methyl iodide)
B = NaCl (precipitate)
