Question : 11 of 29
Marks: +1, -0
(i) Is the binary operation *, defined on set N, given by a * b = a+b2\frac{a+b}{2} for all a , b ∊ N, commutative?
(ii) Is the above binary operation * associative?
Solution:
(i) For all a , b ∊ N , a * b = a+b2\frac{a+b}{2}
Now , b * a = b+a2\frac{b+a}{2} = a+b2\frac{a+b}{2} = a * b
Thus, the binary operation * is commutative.
(ii) Let a , b , c ∊ N
a * b * c = a * (b+c2)\left(\frac{b+c}{2}\right) = a+b+c22\frac{a+\frac{b+c}{2}}{2} = 2a+b+c4\frac{2a+b+c}{4}
a * b * c = (a+b2)\left(\frac{a+b}{2}\right) * c = a+b2+c2\frac{\frac{a+b}{2}+c}{2} = a+b+2c4\frac{a+b+2c}{4}
∴ a * b * c ≠ a * b * c
Thus, the binary operation * is not associative.
