Question : 4 of 29
Marks: +1, -0
For what value of x, the matrix [5−xx+124]\begin{bmatrix} 5-x & x+1 \\ 2 & 4 \end{bmatrix} is singular?
Solution:
Let A = [5−xx+124]\begin{bmatrix} 5-x & x+1 \\ 2 & 4 \end{bmatrix}
It is given that the matrix A is singular, therefore |A| = 0
⇒ ∣5−xx+124∣\begin{vmatrix} 5-x & x+1 \\ 2 & 4 \end{vmatrix} = 0
⇒ 4(5 – x) – 2(x + 1) = 0
⇒ 20 – 4x – 2x – 2 = 0
⇒ -6x + 18 = 0
⇒ x = −18−6\frac{-18}{-6} = 3
Thus, when x = 3, the given matrix A is singular.
