Question : 9 of 20
Marks: +1, -0
The coordinates of the foot of the perpendicular drawn from the point (0, 1, 2) on the x-axis are given by :
Solution:
Vector equation for x-axis is r=λi^\vec{r} = \lambda \hat{i} where x=λx = \lambda. Let a point P(λ, 0, 0) is on the x-axis perpendicular to the given point A(0, 1, 2) then AP\overrightarrow{AP} is perpendicular to λi^\lambda \hat{i}.
APλi^=0\overrightarrow{AP} \cdot \lambda \hat{i} = 0 where AP=λi^j^2k^\overrightarrow{AP} = \lambda \hat{i} - \hat{j} - 2 \hat{k}
(λi^j^2k^)(λi^+0j^+0k^)=0(\lambda \hat{i} - \hat{j} - 2 \hat{k}) \cdot (\lambda \hat{i} + 0 \hat{j} + 0 \hat{k}) = 0
λ2=0\lambda^2 = 0
λ=0\lambda = 0, so the foot of the perpendicular drawn from the point (0, 1, 2) is (0, 0, 0).
