Question : 13 of 26
Marks: +1, -0
(i) Obtain the expression for the cyclotron frequency.
(ii) A deuteron and a proton are accelerated by the cyclotron. Can both be accelerated with the same oscillator frequency? Give reason to justify your answer.
Solution:
(i) Derivation of the expression for cyclotron frequency
(ii) Reason / justification for the correct answer2
(i) Suppose the positive charge ion with charge qq moves in a circle with a velocity vv,then:
  mv2r  =qvB\; \frac{m v^2}{r} \; = q v B
r  =  mvqBr \; = \; \frac{m v}{q B}
Frequency of revolution
  f=  1   Time Period   =  v2πr\; f = \; \frac{1}{\; \text{ Time Period }\; } = \; \frac{v}{2 \pi r}
  f=  qB2≠m\; f = \; \frac{q B}{2 \neq m}
(ii) No
The masses of the two particles, i.e. deuteron and proton, are different. Since (cyclotron) frequency depends inversely on the mass, they cannot be accelerated by the same oscillator frequency.
