What is the purpose of keeping KOH\mathrm{KOH} in the flask?
Solution:  
KOH\mathrm{KOH} absorbs carbon dioxide. Whatever CO2\mathrm{CO}_2 is released by the experimental leaf or already present in the flask is dissolved into the KOH\mathrm{KOH}. So now the flask is free from CO2\mathrm{CO}_2.
