Question : 5 of 20
Marks: +1, -0
Statues and monuments in India are affected by acid rain. How?
Solution:
Monuments and statues are made of either stone or metal M both of which have a tendency to react with acid and therefore, get affected by acid rain which contains H2SO4\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{SO}_4.
M(metal)+H2SO4\underset{\text{(metal)}}{M} + \mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{SO}_4 → M2SO4+H2\mathrm{M}_2\mathrm{SO}_4 + \mathrm{H}_2
CaCO3(from stone)+H2SO4\underset{\text{(from stone)}}{\mathrm{CaCO}_3} + \mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{SO}_4 → CaSO4+H2O+CO2\mathrm{CaSO}_4 + \mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O} + \mathrm{CO}_2
As a result, the monuments are being slowly disfigured.
