Question : 8 of 25
Marks: +1, -0
Write chemical equations for combustion reaction of the following hydrocarbons:
(i) Butane
(ii) Pentene
(iii) Hexyne
(iv) Toluene
Solution:
Upon combustion, any hydrocarbon produces CO2\mathrm{CO}_2 and H2O\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}. For the given hydrocarbons the reactions may be represented as :
(i) Butane : C4H10+132O2→Δ4CO2+5H2O\mathrm{C}_4\mathrm{H}_{10}+\frac{13}{2}\mathrm{O}_2\xrightarrow{\Delta}4\mathrm{CO}_2+5\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}
(ii) Pentane : C5H10+152O2→Δ5CO2+5H2O\mathrm{C}_5\mathrm{H}_{10}+\frac{15}{2}\mathrm{O}_2\xrightarrow{\Delta}5\mathrm{CO}_2+5\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}
(iii) Hexyne : C6H10+172O2→Δ6CO2+5H2O\mathrm{C}_6\mathrm{H}_{10}+\frac{17}{2}\mathrm{O}_2\xrightarrow{\Delta}6\mathrm{CO}_2+5\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}
(iv) Toluene : C7H8+9O2→Δ7CO2+4H2O\mathrm{C}_7\mathrm{H}_8+9\mathrm{O}_2\xrightarrow{\Delta}7\mathrm{CO}_2+4\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}
