Question : 19 of 36
Marks: +1, -0
Consider the reaction of water with F2\mathrm{F}_2 and suggest, in terms of oxidation and reduction, which species are oxidised/reduced?
Solution:
2F2(g)+2H2O(l)2\mathrm{F}_{2(g)} + 2\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}_{(l)}4H(aq)++4F(aq)+O2(g)4\mathrm{H}^+_{(aq)} + 4\mathrm{F}^-_{(aq)} + \mathrm{O}_{2(g)}
In this reaction, H2O\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O} is oxidised to oxygen by F2\mathrm{F}_2. Fluorine has been reduced to F– ion.
