Question : 25 of 40
Marks: +1, -0
Why is nitric acid added to sodium extract before adding silver nitrate for testing halogens?
Solution:
Halogens are detected by AgNO3AgNO_3 due to the formation of AgX ppt. But, if the Lassaigne’s extract contains S2–S^{2–} or CN–CN^{–} ions due to the compound, then they may interfere in the test for halogens. CN–CN^{–} and S2–S^{2–} form AgCN and Ag2SAg_2S with AgNO3AgNO_3 and may produce erroneous results. Therefore, the Lassaigne’s extract is treated with HNO3HNO_3 to decompose HCN and H2SH_2S (vapours) so as to prevent interference.
