Question : 21 of 30
Marks: +1, -0
The Mn3+\mathrm{Mn}^{3+} ion is unstable in solution and undergoes disproportionation to give Mn2+,MnO2\mathrm{Mn}^{2+}, \mathrm{MnO}_2, and H+\mathrm{H}^{+} ion. Write a balanced ionic equation for the reaction.
Solution:
The skeletal equation is :
Mn(aq)3+\mathrm{Mn}^{3+}_{(aq)}Mn(aq)2++MnO2(s)+H(aq)+\mathrm{Mn}^{2+}_{(aq)}+\mathrm{MnO}_{2(s)}+\mathrm{H}^{+}_{(aq)}
Oxidation half equation : Mn(aq)3+\mathrm{Mn}^{3+}_{(aq)}MnO2(s)+4\mathrm{MnO}_{2(s)}^{+4}
or, Mn(aq)+3+2H2O(l)\mathrm{Mn}^{+3}_{(aq)}+2\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}_{(l)}MnO2(s)+4H(aq)++e\mathrm{MnO}_{2(s)} + 4\mathrm{H}^{+}_{(aq)} + e^{-} ... (i)
Reduction half equation : Mn(aq)3+\mathrm{Mn}^{3+}_{(aq)}Mn(aq)2+\mathrm{Mn}^{2+}_{(aq)}
or, Mn(aq)3++e\mathrm{Mn}^{3+}_{(aq)}+e^{-}Mn(aq)2+\mathrm{Mn}^{2+}_{(aq)} ... (ii)
Adding Eq. (i) and Eq. (ii), the balanced equation for the disproportionation reaction is
2Mn(aq)3++2H2O(l)2\mathrm{Mn}^{3+}_{(aq)} + 2\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}_{(l)}MnO2(s)+Mn(aq)2++4H(aq)+\mathrm{MnO}_{2(s)}+\mathrm{Mn}^{2+}_{(aq)} + 4\mathrm{H}^{+}_{(aq)}
