Question : 8 of 40
Marks: +1, -0
Although geometries of NH3NH_3 and H2OH_2O molecules are distorted tetrahedral, bond angle in water is less than that of ammonia. Discuss.
Solution:
Bond angle in NH3NH_3 is 107.5° and in H2OH_2O, angle is 104.5°. In H2OH_2O, oxygen has two lone pairs and in NH3NH_3, nitrogen has only one lone pair. In H2OH_2O, two lone pairs on oxygen repel each other and the bonded pairs more strongly and cause them to come closer thereby reducing the angle.
