Question : 11 of 36
Marks: +1, -0
What is the concentration of sugar (C12H22O11)(\mathrm{C}_{12}\mathrm{H}_{22}\mathrm{O}_{11}) in molL1\mathrm{mol\,L}^{-1} if its 20 g are dissolved in enough water to make a final volume up to 2 L?
Solution:
The molecular mass of sugar (C12H22O11)(\mathrm{C}_{12}\mathrm{H}_{22}\mathrm{O}_{11}) = 12 × 12 + 1 × 22 + 11 × 16
= 144 + 22 + 176 = 342
∴ Moles of sugar = 20342\frac{20}{342} = 0.058
Volume of solution = 2 L
∴ Molarity = Moles of soluteVolume of solution in litre\frac{\text{Moles of solute}}{\text{Volume of solution in litre}} = 0.0582\frac{0.058}{2} = 0.029 molL1\mathrm{mol\,L}^{-1}
