Question : 9 of 23
Marks: +1, -0
Density of a gas is found to be 5.46 g/dm3\mathrm{dm}^3 at 27°C and at 2 bar pressure. What will be its density at STP?
Solution:
We know that PV = nRT
or P = mV×RTM\frac{m}{V} \times \frac{RT}{M} = dRTM\frac{dRT}{M}
∴ d = PMRT\frac{PM}{RT}
or d α PT\frac{P}{T} (R and M are constant for a given gas)
or d1d2\frac{d_1}{d_2} = P1P2×T2T1\frac{P_1}{P_2} \times \frac{T_2}{T_1} or d2d_2 = d1×P2×T1P1×T2\frac{d_1 \times P_2 \times T_1}{P_1 \times T_2}
d1d_1 = 5.46 gdm3\mathrm{g\,dm}^{-3}, P1P_1 = 2 bar, T1T_1 = 273 + 27 = 300 K, d2d_2 = ?, P2P_2 = 1 bar, T2T_2 = 273 K
d2d_2 = 5.46gdm3×1bar×300K2bar×273K\frac{5.46\,\mathrm{g\,dm}^{-3} \times 1\,\mathrm{bar} \times 300\,\mathrm{K}}{2\,\mathrm{bar} \times 273\,\mathrm{K}} = 3.0 gdm3\mathrm{g\,dm}^{-3}
