Question : 23 of 67
Marks: +1, -0
(i) Write the electronic configurations of the following ions :
(a) H\mathrm{H}^{-}
(b) Na+\mathrm{Na}^{+}
(c) O2\mathrm{O}^{2-}
(d) F\mathrm{F}^{-}
(ii) What are the atomic numbers of elements whose outermost electrons are represented by
(a) 3s13s^{1}
(b) 2p32p^{3} and
(c) 3p53p^{5}?
(iii) Which atoms are indicated by the following configurations?
(a) [He]2s1[\mathrm{He}]\,2s^{1}
(b) [Ne]3s23p3[\mathrm{Ne}]\,3s^{2}\,3p^{3}
(c) [Ar]4s23d1[\mathrm{Ar}]\,4s^{2}\,3d^{1}.
Solution:
(i) The respective electronic configurations are :
(a) H\mathrm{H}^{-}1s21s^{2}
(b) Na+\mathrm{Na}^{+}1s22s22p61s^{2}\,2^{s2}\,2p^{6}
(c) O2\mathrm{O}^{2-}1s22s22p61s^{2}\,2s^{2}\,2p^{6}
(d) F\mathrm{F}^{-}1s22s22p61s^{2}\,2s^{2}\,2p^{6}
(ii) (a) 3s13s^{1}1s22s22p63s11s^{2}\,2s^{2}\,2p^{6}\,3s^{1}
∴ The atomic number of element = 11
(b) 2p32p^{3}1s22s22p31s^{2}\,2s^{2}\,2p^{3}
∴ The atomic number of element = 7
(c) 3p53p^{5}1s22s22p63s23p51s^{2}\,2s^{2}\,2p^{6}\,3s^{2}\,3p^{5}
∴ The atomic number of element = 17
(iii) (a) [He]2s1[\mathrm{He}]\,2s^{1} → Lithium, Li
(b) [Ne]3s23p3[\mathrm{Ne}]\,3s^{2}\,3p^{3} → Phosphorus, P
(c) [Ar]4s23d1[\mathrm{Ar}]\,4s^{2}\,3d^{1} → Scandium, Sc
