Question : 5 of 67
Marks: +1, -0
Yellow light emitted from a sodium lamp has a wavelength (λ) of 580 nm. Calculate the frequency (u) and wavenumber (n) of the yellow light.
Solution:
Wavelength of yellow light = 580 nm
= 580 × 10910^{-9} m [Since 1 nm = 10910^{-9} m]
Frequency (u) = cλ\frac{c}{\lambda} ,
where c = velocity of light = 3.0 × 108 m s1s^{-1}, λ = wavelength of sodium lamp
u = 3.0×108580×109\frac{3.0 \times 10^{8}}{580 \times 10^{-9}} = 5.17 × 1014s110^{14} \mathrm{s}^{-1}
Again, wavenumber (v)\left(\overset{-}{v}\right) = 1λ\frac{1}{\lambda} = 1580×109m\frac{1}{580 \times 10^{-9} \mathrm{m}} = 1.724 × 106m110^{6} \mathrm{m}^{-1}
