Question : 12 of 32
Marks: +1, -0
Discuss the various reactions that occur in the Solvay process.
Solution:
Solvay process : It is an industrial method for obtaining sodium carbonate from sodium chloride (NaCl) and limestone (CaCO3\mathrm{CaCO_3}). The raw materials required in this process are common salt, ammonia and limestone. The equations for the complete process may be written as :
2NH3+H2O+CO22\mathrm{NH_3} + \mathrm{H_2O} + \mathrm{CO_2} → (NH4)2CO3\mathrm{(NH_4)_2CO_3}
(NH4)2CO3+H2O+CO2\mathrm{(NH_4)_2CO_3} + \mathrm{H_2O} + \mathrm{CO_2} → 2NH4HCO32\mathrm{NH_4HCO_3}
NH4HCO3\mathrm{NH_4HCO_3} + NaCl → NH4Cl+NaHCO3\mathrm{NH_4Cl} + \mathrm{NaHCO_3}
Sodium hydrogen carbonate crystal separates out and is heated to give sodium carbonate.
2NaHCO32\mathrm{NaHCO_3} →Δ\xrightarrow[\Delta]{} Na2CO3+CO2+H2O\mathrm{Na_2CO_3}+\mathrm{CO_2}+\mathrm{H_2O}
CO2\mathrm{CO_2} required in this process is produced by heating CaCO3\mathrm{CaCO_3}.
CaCO3→ΔCaO+CO2\mathrm{CaCO_3}\xrightarrow[\Delta]{}\mathrm{CaO}+\mathrm{CO_2}
CaO + H2O\mathrm{H_2O} → Ca(OH)2\mathrm{Ca(OH)_2}
In this process, NH3\mathrm{NH_3} is recovered when the solution containing NH4Cl\mathrm{NH_4Cl} is treated with Ca(OH)2.CaCl2\mathrm{Ca(OH)_2}. \mathrm{CaCl_2} is obtained as a by product.
2NH4Cl+Ca(OH)22\mathrm{NH_4Cl} + \mathrm{Ca(OH)_2} → 2NH3+CaCl2+H2O2\mathrm{NH_3} + \mathrm{CaCl_2} + \mathrm{H_2O}
