Question : 12 of 25
Marks: +1, -0
A short bar magnet has a magnetic moment of 0.48 J T−1T^{-1}. Give the direction and magnitude of the magnetic field produced by the magnet at a distance of 10 cm from the centre of the magnet on (a) the axis, (b) the equatorial lines (normal bisector) of the magnet.
Solution:
For short magnet
(i) BaxialB_{\text{axial}} = μ04π2Mr3\frac{\mu_0}{4\pi} \frac{2M}{r^3}
BaxialB_{\text{axial}} = 10−7×2×0.48(0.1)3\frac{10^{-7} \times 2 \times 0.48}{(0.1)^3} = 9.6 × 10−510^{-5} T ,
(ii) B equatorial = μ04πMr3\frac{\mu_0}{4\pi} \frac{M}{r^3} = 4.8 × 10−510^{-5} T.
