Question : 3 of 28
Marks: +1, -0
A long straight wire in the horizontal plane carries a current of 50 A in north to south direction. Give the magnitude and direction of B at a point 2.5 m east of the wire.
Solution:
Let us first decide the standard directions on the plane of paper.
Magnitude of magnetic field
∣B→∣\left|\overset{\rightarrow}{B}\right| = μ04π2Ir\frac{\mu_0}{4\pi} \frac{2I}{r} = 10−7×2×502.510^{-7} \times \frac{2\times 50}{2.5} = 40 × 10−710^{-7} T
By right hand palm rule, the direction of magnetic field can be seen as upward.
B→\overset{\rightarrow}{B} = 40 × 10−7k^10^{-7} \hat{k} T
