An organic compound (A) (molecular formula C8H16O2\mathrm{C_8H_{16}O_2}) was hydrolysed with dilute sulphuric acid to give a carboxylic acid (B) and an alcohol (C). Oxidation of (C) with chromic acid produced (B). (C) on dehydration gives but-1-ene. Write equations for the reactions involved.
Solution:  
Given :
(i) Compound (A) upon hydrolysis produces one molecule each of a carboxylic acid and alcohol. This indicates that (A) is an ester.
(ii) (C) upon oxidation produces (B) proving that (C) and (B) have same no. of carbon atoms.
(iii) (C) on dehydration produces but-1-ene. This, coupled with the fact that it gives a carboxylic acid (B) on oxidation shows that (C) is a primary alcohol.
∴ (C) is CH3CH2CH2CH2OHButan-1-ol\underset{\text{Butan-1-ol}}{\mathrm{CH_3-CH_2-CH_2-CH_2OH}}
(B) is H3C(CH2)2COOHButanoic acid\underset{\text{Butanoic acid}}{\mathrm{H_3C-(CH_2)_2-COOH}}
and hence, (A) is H3C(CH2)2COO(CH2)3CH3Butyl butanaote\underset{\text{Butyl butanaote}}{\mathrm{H_3C-(CH_2)_2-}\overset{\mathrm{O}}{\overset{\parallel}{\mathrm{C}}}\mathrm{-O-(CH_2)_3-CH_3}}
