Question : 20 of 43
Marks: +1, -0
A solution of [Ni(H2O)6]2+[\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O})_6]^{2+} is green but a solution of [Ni(CN)4]2[\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{CN})_4]^{2-}is colourless. Explain.
Solution:
[Ni(H2O)6]2+[\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O})_6]^{2+} has unpaired electrons due to weak H2O\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O} ligands whichabsorb light from visible region and radiate complementary colour i.e.,green whereas [Ni(CN)4]2[\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{CN})_4]^{2-} does not have any unpaired electron due tostrong CN^{-}ligand, therefore, does not absorb light from visible regionhence, it is colourless.
