What will be the correct order for the wavelengths of absorption in the visible region for the following :
[Ni(NO2)6]4−[\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{NO}_2)_6]^{4-} ,[Ni(NH3)6]2+[\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{NH}_3)_6]^{2+},[Ni(H2O)6]2+?[\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O})_6] ^{2+}?
Solution:  
In spectrochemical series the order of the given ligands isH2O<NH3<NO2−\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O} < \mathrm{NH}_3 < \mathrm{NO}_2^{-}. Hence, the wave length of light will be absorbedin the opposite order since E=hcλE = \frac{hc}{\lambda} .
Hence, the order of absorption of light will be
[Ni(NO2)6]4−[\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{NO}_2)_6]^{4-} < [Ni(NH3)6]2+[\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{NH}_3)_6]^{2+} < [Ni(H2O)6]2+[\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O})_6] ^{2+}.
