Question : 38 of 49
Marks: +1, -0
What can be inferred from the magnetic moment values of the following complex species?
 Example  Magnetic Moment (BM)
 K4[Mn(CN)6]\mathrm{K}_4[\mathrm{Mn}(\mathrm{CN})_6]  2.2
 [Fe(H2O)6]2+[\mathrm{Fe}(\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O})_6]^{2+}  5.3
 K2[MnCl4]\mathrm{K}_2[\mathrm{MnCl}_4]  5.9
Solution:
Magnetic Moment (μ)=n(n+2)BM(\mu)=\sqrt{n(n+2)} \text{BM}
When n=1,n=1,
μ=1(1+2)=3=1.73BM≈2\mu=\sqrt{1(1+2)}=\sqrt{3}=1.73 \text{BM}\approx 2
When n=2,n=2,
μ=2(2+2)=8=2.83BM≈3\mu=\sqrt{2(2+2)}=\sqrt{8}=2.83 \text{BM} \approx 3
When n=3,n=3,
μ=3(3+2)=15=3.87BM≈4\mu=\sqrt{3(3+2)}=\sqrt{15}=3.87 \text{BM} \approx 4
When n≈4,n\approx 4,
μ=4(4+2)=24=4.90BM=5\mu=\sqrt{4(4+2)}=\sqrt{24}=4.90\text{BM}=5
When n=5,n=5,
μ=5(5+2)=35=5.92BM≈6\mu=\sqrt{5(5+2)}=\sqrt{35}=5.92 \text{BM}\approx 6
K4[Mn(CN)6]:\mathrm{K}_4[\mathrm{Mn}(\mathrm{CN})_6] : Oxidation state of Mn is +2, Mn2+^{2+} has an electronicconfiguration of [Ar]3d5^{5}.
As μ\mu = 2.2 BM which corresponds to one unpaired electron. The orbitaldiagramfor Mn2+^{2+} is
[Fe(H2O)6]2+:[\mathrm{Fe}(\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O})_6]^{2+} :μ\mu = 5.3 BM corresponds to 4 unpaired electrons. Theconfiguration of Fe2+^{2+} ions is [Ar]3d6^{6}and orbital diagram is
K2[MnCl4],:\mathrm{K}_2[\mathrm{MnCl}_4], : μ\mu = 5.9 BM, Mn2+ ion has 5 unpaired electrons. Its orbitaldiagram is
