Question : 4 of 49
Marks: +1, -0
To what extent do the electronic configurations decide the stability of oxidation states in the first series of the transition elements? Illustrate your answer with examples.
Solution:
Sc3+Sc^{3+} has stable electronic configuration (vacant d-orbital), therefore Sc3+Sc^{3+} is more stable than Sc+Sc^{+}.
Fe3+Fe^{3+} is more stable than Fe2+Fe^{2+} due to half filled d-orbitals.
Mn2+Mn^{2+} is more stable than Mn3+Mn^{3+} due to half filled d-orbitals.
V5+V^{5+} is more stable (due to vacant d-orbital) than V3+V^{3+}.
