Question : 22 of 74
Marks: +1, -0
How is SO2\mathrm{SO_2} an air pollutant?
Solution:
SO2\mathrm{SO_2} present in atmosphere combines with water to give sulphuricacid.
2SO2+O2+2H2O2H2SO42\mathrm{SO_2} + \mathrm{O_2} + 2\mathrm{H_2O} \rightarrow 2\mathrm{H_2SO_4}
This is called acid rain. Acid rain causes extensive damage to building andstatues made of marble, limestone, etc. due to its reaction to give CaSO4\mathrm{CaSO_4}.
CaCO3+H2SO4CaSO4+CO2+H2O\mathrm{CaCO_3} + \mathrm{H_2SO_4} \rightarrow \mathrm{CaSO_4} + \mathrm{CO_2} + \mathrm{H_2O}
This way SO2\mathrm{SO_2} acts as pollutant.
