Question : 66 of 74
Marks: +1, -0
Considering the parameters such as bond dissociation enthalpy, electron gain enthalpy and hydration enthalpy, compare the oxidising power of F2\mathrm{F}_2 and Cl2\mathrm{Cl}_2.
Solution:
Fluorine is a better oxidising agent than chlorine because EF2/F−∘E^{\circ}_{\mathrm{F}_2/\mathrm{F}^{-}} is higher than ECl2/Cl−∘E^{\circ}_{\mathrm{Cl}_2/\mathrm{Cl}^{-}}. It is mainly due to low bond dissociation energy, high hydration energy and lower electron gain enthalpy, non-availability of d-orbitals in valence shell, that results in higher reduction potential ofF2\mathrm{F}_2 than chlorine.
