The crofter was a lonely old man who neither had a wife and a child. He wanted someone to talk to, therefore, he allowed the peddler to spend the night at his house. He not only gave him shelter, but also gave him food to eat and tobacco to smoke. He started a conversation with him and told him everything about himself and his earnings.
