Question : 3
Total: 3
Justify the title of the lesson 'On The Face Of It'.
Solution:
The aptness of the title 'On the face of it' lies in the fact that physical appearances do not change the personality. Disabilities must be accepted by the society and all human beings should be loved equally as they are the creations of God. The lesson motivates people like Derry who are physically handicapped. It strikingly yet appallingly depicts the gloomy world of physically impaired. It deals with the sense of loss and isolation and the ways to overcome it. The pain caused by disability is much less than the pain of hostility. In the play, Mr. Lamb seems to be a weird lame old man, but in reality he is a very kind and generous person. He loves all the people with friendly spontaneity. On the other hand, Derry has turned pessimistic towards life for he has to face discrimination, but he also possesses soft and tender heart. It is Mr. Lamb who tells Derry that it all depends upon people's individual perceptions. A thing is a beauty for one while that may be ugly for others.
