Elaborate any two advantages and limitations each of organic farming in the light of the above statement.
Solution:
Advantages of Organic Farming:
(i) Sustains soil fertility: Organic forming does not use harmful pesticides and chemicals which are petroleum based. It uses animal manure and composts made of wastes of fruits, vegetables, leaves etc. which helps to sustain soil fertility.
(ii) Eco-friendly: It discards the use of synthetic chemicals. These chemical fertilizers pollute the ground water by raising its nitrate content. Nitrate is a hazardous chemical which pollutes the environment. So, we can say that organic farming is environment friendly.
Limitations of Organic Farming:
(i) High Cost: Organic products have high cost per unit of output and give low yield because it takes more time to grow and a lot of labour is involved. So, small and marginal farmers cannot afford organic farming.
(ii) Shorter Shelf Life: Organic products have shorter life span than chemical based products because in organic product preservatives are not used. It is difficult to store them for a longer period of time.
On the basis of above, we can say that besides its limitations, Organic farming is the need of the hour to promote sustainable development.
