However, if they handed him over to the police, the wounded man would undoubtedly die. Ultimately, Dr. Sadao's duty as a doctor overpowered all other insignificant thoughts, and he decided to operate on Tom despite the servants' revolt at the idea of serving a white man. Hana obeyed her husband and assisted him in administering anesthesia if the patient required it. Dr. Sadao was able to save the dying man. Nonetheless, as a true patriot, he informed the General about the prisoner. Dr. Sadao acknowledged the General's decision without any reluctance.
