What are covalent compounds? Why are they different from ionic compounds? List their three characteristic properties.
Solution:  
Covalent compounds are formed by sharing of electrons. They are different from ionic compounds as ionic compounds are formed by transfer of electrons.
Characteristics of covalent compounds are :
(i) They generally have low melting and boiling points.
(ii) They are generally insoluble or sparingly soluble in water but soluble in organic solvents.
(iii) They do not conduct electricity.
