Question : 7 of 36
Marks: +1, -0
Write the structural formula of ethanol. What happens when it is heated with excess of conc. H2SO4 at 443K, ? Write the chemical equation for the reaction stating the role of conc. H2SO4 in this reaction.
Solution:
Structural formula of ethanol is :
CH3CH2OH
When ethanol is heated with excess of conc. H2SO4 at 443K it results in the dehydration of ethanol to give ethene.
CH3CH2OH Ethanol Conc. H2SO443KCH2 Ethene =CH2+H2O
Role of conc. H2SO4 : Conc. H2SO4 acts as a dehydrating agent which removes water from the ethanol.
