Question : 8 of 36
Marks: +1, -0
Distinguish between esterification and saponification reaction with the help of the chemical equations for each. State one use of each (i) esters, and (ii) saponification process.
Solution:
Esterification is opposite of saponification. In esterification :
RCOOH+R′OH→RCOOR′+H2O\mathrm{RCOOH} + \mathrm{R}^{'} \mathrm{OH} \xrightarrow{} \mathrm{RCOOR}^{'} + \mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}
Whereas in saponification :
RCOOR′+NaOH→RCOONa+R′OH\mathrm{RCOOR}^{'} + \mathrm{NaOH} \rightarrow \mathrm{RCOONa} + \mathrm{R}^{'} \mathrm{OH}
(i) Uses of Esters : Esters are used in making perfumes.
(ii) Uses of saponification reaction : Used in making soaps and soap products on a large scale.
