Define the term pollination. Differentiate between self pollination and cross pollination. What is the significance of pollination?
Solution:
Pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from anther of a stamen to the stigma of a carpel. Pollination is a significant process as it helps in fertilisation by bringing the male gamete (male pronucleus) closer to the female (egg) and allowing their fusion. It, helps in the production of seeds and fruits and thereby help in reproduction as the seeds formed helps in generation of new offsprings. Crosspollination helps in the introduction of new variations in plants.
 S.No  Self-pollination  Cross-pollination
1  In self-pollination, the pollen grains are transferred from anther to stigma of the same flower or different flower present on the same plant.  In cross-pollination, the pollen grains are transferred from anther to stigma of another flower present on a different plant.
2  In self-pollination, only one plant is involved.  In cross-pollination, two different plants are involved.
3  It is a sure met-hod of pollination (pollination rarely fails).  It is not a sure method of pollination (pollination may fail).
