Question : 3
Total: 6
(a) State Snell's law of refraction of light.
(b) When a ray of light travelling in air enters obliquely into a glass slab, it is observed that the light ray emerges parallel to the incident ray but it is shifted sideways slightly. Draw a labelled ray diagram to illustrate it.
Solution:
(a) The ratio of sine of angle of incidence to the sine of angle of refraction is a constant, for the light of a given colour and for the given pair of media. This law is also known as Snell's law of refraction. If i is the angle of incidence and r is the angle of refraction, then
sini
sinr
= constant

This constant value is called the refractive index of the second medium with respect to the first.
(b) In case of a rectangular glass slab, the refraction takes place at both air-glass interface and glass-air interface. The emergent ray is parallel to the direction of incident ray.
