Question : 3
Total: 7
Write thechemical formula of two consecutive homologous of organic compounds having functional group − OH . What happens to the (i) boiling point and (ii) solubility of organic compounds of a homologous series as the molecular mass increases.
Solution:
(i) The boiling point increases as the molecular mass of the homologous series compounds increases. This happens due to increase in Van der Waals forces as the mass increases.
(ii) The solubility generally decreases as the size of the molecule becomes bigger. Due to increase in size, the lyophobic carbon part increases which decreases the possibility of hydrogen bond formation.
