Question : 3
Total: 7
Consider the carbon compounds having following molecular formula:(i) C2H2 (ii) C2H6 (iii) C3H7OH
(iv) C2H5COOH (v) CH3CHO
(a) Identify which one of the above compounds, is a member of aldehyde series.
(b) Write the general formula of the series to which compound C2H2 belongs.
(c) Which one of the above compounds has triple bonds between carbon - carbon atoms?
(d) Write the molecular formula of the first member of the homologous series to which the compound C3H7OH belongs.
Solution:
(a) Acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) is a member of aldehyde series.
(b) Ethyne (C2H2) is the first member of the alkyne family, with two carbon atoms connected by a triple bond. Alkynes comprise a series of carbon and hydrogenbased compounds that contain at least one triple bond. This group of compounds is a homologous series with the general molecular formula of CnH2n2, where n equals to any integer greater than one.
(c) Ethyne (C2H2) have two carbon atoms connected by a triple bond.
(d) C3H7OH belongs to the homologous series with general formula of
CnH(2n+1)OH
The first member of this series is
C1H(2(1)+1)OH=CH3OH methanol.
