Question : 27
Total: 39
(i) While electrolysing water before passing the current some drops of an acid are added. Why? Name the gases liberated at cathode and anode. Write the relationship between the volume of gas collected at anode and the volume of gas collected at cathode.
(ii) What is observed when silver chloride is exposed to sunlight? Give the type of reaction involved.
(ii) What is observed when silver chloride is exposed to sunlight? Give the type of reaction involved.
Solution:
(i) Acid is added to increase the conductivity of water. Gas released at cathode is hydrogen H 2 and that at the anode is oxygen O 2 . The volume of gases of hydrogen and oxygen collected at respective electrodes is always in the ratio of 2 : 1 , where hydrogen is double in volume than oxygen.
(ii) When silver chloride is exposed to sunlight, white silver chloride turns grey in sunlight. This is due to the decomposition of silver chloride into grey silver and chlorine by light.
2 AgCl ( s )
2 Ag ( s ) + Cl 2 ( g )
This is a type of decomposition reaction.
(ii) When silver chloride is exposed to sunlight, white silver chloride turns grey in sunlight. This is due to the decomposition of silver chloride into grey silver and chlorine by light.
This is a type of decomposition reaction.
