Question : 7 of 10
Marks: +1, -0
Consider the following salts:
(i) YCl\mathrm{YCl}
(ii) NH4X\mathrm{NH}_4\,\mathrm{X}
(iii) ZCO3\mathrm{ZCO}_3
(a) What would be the pH\mathrm{pH} of the solution if in YCl,Y\mathrm{YCl},\,\mathrm{Y} is sodium? Give reason for your answer.
(b) If in salt NH4X,X\mathrm{NH}_4\,\mathrm{X},\,\mathrm{X} is nitrate, then its solution will give what colour with universal indicator? Why?
(c) What would be the change in colour in blue litmus if ZCO3\mathrm{ZCO}_3 is added to it and Z\mathrm{Z} is potassium?
Solution:
(a) If in YCl,Y\mathrm{YCl},\,\mathrm{Y} is sodium, the pH\mathrm{pH} of the salt solution would be alkaline or basic. This is because the chloride ion (Cl)(\mathrm{Cl}^{-}) is the conjugate base of the strong acid hydrochloric acid (HCl)(\mathrm{HCl}) and does not affect the pH\mathrm{pH} significantly, while the sodium ion (Na+)(\mathrm{Na}^{+})is the conjugate acid of a weak base (NaOH)(\mathrm{NaOH}) and can act as a source of hydroxide ions (OH)(\mathrm{OH}^{-})in solution, increasing the pH\mathrm{pH}.
(b) If in salt NH4X,X\mathrm{NH}_4\,\mathrm{X},\,\mathrm{X} is a nitrate, its solution will give a green colour with a universal indicator. This is because ammonium ion (NH4+)(\mathrm{NH}_4^{+})is a weak acid that can partially dissociate to form hydrogen ions (H+)(\mathrm{H}^{+})in the solution, making the solution acidic. Nitrate ion (NO3)(\mathrm{NO}_3^{-})is a neutral ion and does not affect the pH\mathrm{pH}. The green colour of the solution indicates a pH\mathrm{pH} between 7 and 6.
(c) If ZCO3\mathrm{ZCO}_3 is added to the blue litmus solution and Z\mathrm{Z} is potassium, the blue litmus solution will turn pink or red. This is because the carbonate ion (CO32)(\mathrm{CO}_3^{2-}) is a strong base that can accept hydrogen ions (H+)(\mathrm{H}^{+})from water, forming bicarbonate ion (HCO3)(\mathrm{HCO}_3^{-})and hydroxide ion (OH)(\mathrm{OH}^{-}), and increasing the pH\mathrm{pH}. The blue litmus solution, which is a pH\mathrm{pH} indicator that turns red in acidic conditions, will be affected by the increased pH\mathrm{pH} and turn pink or red.
