Explain 'Harmony, Not Discord' as a principle and 'Motion-Study' as a technique of scientific management.
Solution:
Harmony, not discord: According to this principle, there should be complete harmony between management and workers and there should be a transformation in the thinking of both parties, called mental revolution. Workers should not be overburdened with work, while should not feel dissatisfied with their investment of time and money in an organisation.
For example, if a worker is having a problem with the working hours, he should talk to the manager about it, instead of letting it affect production (by going on a strike). Similarly, managers should listen to the worker's suggestions and demands rather than ignoring them.
Motion Study: Motion study refers to an indepth study of the movements of a worker while doing a task.
Taylor recognised three types of movements:
(i) Productive
(ii) Unproductive
(iii) Incidental
Motion study refers to the study of movements like lifting, putting objects, sitting and changing positions, etc., which are undertaken while doing a typical job. Unnecessary movements are sought to be eliminated so that it takes less time to complete the job efficiently.
The objective of motion study is to eliminate unproductive movements in doing a task to achieve efficiency and reduce the time required to do the task.
